Have you ever wondered how Ariana Grande can keep a smile on her face after wearing her signature slicked-back ponytail for hours on end? Same. If you’ve ever worn this hairstyle, you know just how painful it can be.

Despite what you may believe, Grande is not a unicorn and she gets “hair hurt” too. In a recent Twitter convo with fellow singer Camila Cabello, she admitted to the constant pain that her ponytail causes her and it’s all too relatable.
Cabello tagged Grande in a tweet sharing, “I just did a high ponytail for the first time and it is literally pulling on my BRAIN ITS SO PAINFUL HOW DO YOU DO IT.” Grande got real in her reply saying, “well u actually have hair so that prolly makes it a lil more painful….. nah jk i’m in constant pain and don’t care at all.”

Cabello went on to say that she had to take the ponytail off (with a spot-on photo reply) because of the pain.

Why is this hairstyle so freaking painful? A dermatologist told Allure, “What’s happening is inflammation coming from blood vessels in the scalp is flooding the nerves in the hair follicles and causing them to ache.”
You have to give Ariana credit for putting herself through this hair suffering in order to commit to a look that she’s defined for herself over the years. Maybe the saying “beauty is pain” has some legitimacy to it after all.
