Austin Butler is the king of rock n’ roll!

The actor and singer we know and love from Switched at Birth, The Carrie Diaries and Zoey 101 has been cast as Elvis Presley in the upcoming Baz Luhrmann biopic.

“I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist,” said the director. “Through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.”

He will star opposite Tom Hanks, who has already signed on to play Presley’s manager Col. Tom Parker.

Earlier this month, The Hollywood Reporter let the world know that five young actors – including Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller and, of course, Butler –were vying for the lead role in the untitled Elvis project. Up against major competition the likes of Golden Globe nominees and an actual rock star, Butler was the right fit.

“Throughout the casting process, it was an honour for me to encounter such a vast array of talent,” explained Luhrmann. “I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in ‘The Iceman Cometh’ on Broadway.”

Along with his fans, Butler’s longtime girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens is elated he landed this major role. “I CANT WAIT,” she wrote on Instagram. “SO PROUD OF MY HONEYYYYY!!!”

The film is expected to begin shooting in early 2020.

We already Can’t Help Falling in Love with Butler, (and now we can save Harry Styles for the Mick Jagger biopic!)
