Since the eight-week postal survey in Australia revealed that the majority of the country wants to legalize same-sex marriage, the country has been having a bit of a pride moment. In November there were celebratory marches and parties but the verdict also means some work for parliament. They are expected to legalize same-sex marriage by Christmas (and possibly even by the end of the week). A parliamentary debate on the issue got pretty exciting this week when Liberal MP Tim Wilson proposed to his partner, Ryan Bolger, who was sitting in the gallery.

“With the indulgence of the speaker, the person I have to thank most is my partner Ryan,” Wilson said in his speech, “You have had to tolerate more than most because you have had to put up with me. Trust me! This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship. We both know this issue isn’t the reason we got involved in politics. Give us tax reform any day. But in my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands. And that they are the answer to the question we cannot ask. So there’s only one thing left to do. Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”

Bolger quickly responded with a “yes” and it was recorded in the transcripts for posterity. Wilson has been very active in bringing this marriage equality legislation to Australia and has spoken previously about his relationship with Bolger and the rings that have symbolized their commitment to one another even though they couldn’t legally marry.

“For seven years, a ring has sat on both of our left hands, and they are the answer to a question we still cannot ask,” Wilson told parliament earlier this year, “No matter what happens from here, we have already achieved more than many who come and go from this place because we have lived the change we seek in the world.”
As you might expect, people are beside themselves at how adorable this moment was.
