If you’re a fan of classic Avril – we’re talking Let Go era – you’re probably in love with the vibe of her new album, Head Above Water. And by “love” we mean you’re probably screaming out “It Was In Me” like you screamed out “I’m With You” waaay back in the day – and there’s good reason for that. Avril told etalk that she wrote some of the new album with singer-songwriter Laura Christy who was Lavigne’s collaborator on her biggest successes like “Complicated,” “Sk8er Boi” and, of course, “I’m With You.” Yeah, no wonder every song on this thing is gold. “I said to [Laura], I was like, ‘Can we write ‘I’m With You: Part Two’? Cause that’s my favourite song and I love, today even, still singing it on-stage,” she said. And that’s exactly what we got. Another collaborator who was crucial to the album’s sound (and the fact it exists at all) was Avril’s ex-husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger. “He was really encouraging to get me back in the studio, to get me singing,” Avril said. “The first two songs I wrote for this album were ‘Head Above Water’ and ‘Warrior.’ And they were about the health struggle I was going through. And he got me up in his studio and recorded me singing those songs and he supported me all the way through the entire making of this record. “How cool is this?” Lavigne continues, “If I was stuck on a lyric or something, I’d call Chad up and be like, ‘Yo, I don’t know what to say here! What should I say?’ or, ‘Do you like this lyric?’... Or I’d put him on FaceTime and be like, ‘Oh my god, check out this song I just wrote!’ and he’s like, ‘Yeah! Keep going!’” Another unexpected collab? That little ditty featuring Nicki Minaj that shook us to our core. We never even dared to dream it and apparently neither did Avril – but the world works in weeeird ways. “I had never worked with Nicki and I like, love her music and so having her be part of this album was super dope,” Avril said. You might recall the two of them fangirled over each other on the day they released the song. We stan a couple of legends! We’re also hoping we might see some more collabs between Avril and her fellow Canadian artists. She says she’s totally blown away by the Canadian talent dominating music right now. “Isn’t it amazing? I have these conversations with people all the time – there are so many incredible artists coming out of Canada, I can’t even believe it,” she said. “I love Shawn Mendes and there’s The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Drake – there are so many incredible artists!” Do we seen an Avril/Shawn collab in the future? Hopefully! Avril says that while a lot has changed since her last album, this is still what she was meant to do. Especially when it comes to performing on stage. “[Performing] doesn’t feel any different, it feels the same, it’s so natural for me,” she said. “Just to be back up on stage, I feel like I’m home. It’s easy, it’s enjoyable and I love and appreciate music more than ever now.” Sooo, does that mean we’re going to see a tour in the future?? Right now I’m excited because I’m going to be getting on a plane and going to Abu Dhabi for the Special Olympics to perform at the opening ceremonies,” she said. “And then I’m flying to Japan so I’ll get to see all the fans out there, reconnect and put on some little acoustic sets… and then yeah, I think we’ll put a tour together towards the end of the year.” Looks like we know what our “Concert Fund” will be going toward this year!
