It wasn’t the best week for straight-up beautiful fashion. Sure, some stars knocked it out of the park in some gorgeously chic looks (we thank you for your service, Jessica Alba and Elizabeth Debicki), but the fashion scales tipped more toward the questionable side of things with some badly executed takes on menswear and awards show glamour (would someone please have a word with January Jones‘ and Elisabeth Moss’s stylists? Thanks). What really sent the fashion week over the edge was Avril Lavigne’s seriously eyebrow-raising look on Sunday. Complete with a floor-length cape, plunging neckline, and dripping with jewels that unfortunately look like mould, it had her more closely resembling a comic book supervillain than your garden-variety pop star.
Intrigued? We don’t blame you. Read on, for this week’s style winners and losers…

Avril Lavigne stepped out looking like a mouldy supervillain

Jessica Alba
We’re sure you’ll agree, Jessica looks positively dreamy in this floaty number. The classic halter neck cut; the fun, summery print; and that cascading, wavy hair; not to mention the on-point colour coordination, are the perfect recipe for style success. We applaud!

Oh boy. In this plunging jumpsuit and (matching? attached?) ginormous cape, Avril looks more like a very glamorous villain from a superhero movie than a pop star on the red carpet. And with that blingy jewellery? No need to make things this complicated, Avril.

Jameela Jamil
We love Jameela, and her fashion normally hits the bulls eye, but the abundance of ruffles on both the body of the dress and sleeves is overkill. Between that and the weird chainmail on the rest of the dress, it’s a certified style fail.

Jada Pinkett Smith
We’re not sure Jada knows the word ‘subtle’, and this might be proof. The fit of this two-piece pantsuit is on point, but with such a tacky-looking texture, does it matter? The lapel and black underlayer work, but the suit itself looks like it’s made of tinfoil. Certainly not her finest fashion moment.

Okay, we get this is an attempt at cutting-edge fashion, but there’s no getting around one fact—this dress is just not nice to look at. The Fendi logo, the graphic print, and the stripes? It makes for a lot of ugly clashing. We appreciate her foray into more grown-up looks, but something less try-hard will do just fine for next time.

Elisabeth Moss
Elisabeth has never been known as a style maven, so why are we still surprised by her questionable red carpet choices? With this asymmetrical mini, comprised of velvet on one side, fishnet on the other, and a very garish dragon embellishment dividing them, she’s scoring absolutely zero sartorial points. Sorry, Lissie, but you might need to have a word with your stylist.

Tessa Thompson
Oh, Tessa. We get that you love to think outside the box with your style choices, but there’s unique, and then there’s just unflattering. This oversized, textured blazer, with oh-so-chunky platformed loafers does not an outfit make. In fact, there’s something distinctly unfinished about the look. It might be for the more experimentally-minded, but we’ll have to pass.

Busy Philipps
Maybe it’s her cute dress or even cuter lipstick, but Busy is dressed perfectly for a late spring day. The powder-blue polka-dot dress from Reformation is a comfy, chic, and uplifting choice, and the oversized sunnies keep her looking seasonally appropriate. As you were, Busy.

Aubrey Plaza
In this fitted floral strapless midi, Aubrey looks smart, and just a little bit cutesy. Sure, it could benefit from something edgier, but with her easy-going locks, and neutral makeup and pumps, it’s a perfectly harmless and passable look.

This shimmering, shining jumpsuit is such a treat on Melissa. The fabric, texture, and that popping dark lip make for a fabulous combination. Plus, it looks seriously comfortable too. And as with such statement garments, little is needed in the way of accessories. Brava.

Olivia Wilde
It’s a little dull, but we can’t fault Olivia’s sleek tailoring in this simple monochome look. Sporting a floor-length blazer with cutouts for sleeves is an easy way of of making a simple piece look superchic. And with that crisp white top, and her signature winged eyeliner, she’s the picture of smartness.

Jennifer Morrison
Looking more like a flattened envelope than a person in a ‘dress,’ Jennifer borders on cartoonish here. Even without the sleeves, this blazer dress drowns her slightly, but with those flapping angles? It’s verging on absurd.

January Jones
Showing us the trend for menswear is going well and truly strong, January stepped out in this very underwhelming two-piece. We appreciate what she was going for – oversized in a Lady Gaga-inspired way – but with that flat, boring bob, the look misses the mark this time. Points for the snakeskin purse, but that’s all here.

Now this is how it’s done. In a satin navy-blue maxi, Elizabeth is the definition of elegance. The cut is gorgeous, from the boat neck to the lightly cinched-in waist. And the simple hair and makeup? Pitch perfect.
