While most of the award shows during awards season are trying to figure out how to put on a safe, physically distanced show, the 2020 BET Soul Train Awards on Sunday were doubly-tasked with being safe whilst also making sure that their mission statement for the show was loud and clear: Black Girl Magic needs to be honoured and celebrated. So who better to do that than the stars of the hit '90s sitcom Martin, Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold (Martin Lawrence was MIA)?

As it was the third time the duo have hosted the ceremony, the two of them launched right into a dancing/rapping/comedy medley that saw them dressed to the nines in cat-suits, top hats, and pleather skirts. First doing the viral TikTok dance to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage,” they launched into their classic bickering selves (that’s so Gina and Pam of them!) before performing a Chloe x Halle “Do It” remix about how 2020 has seen the rise of Black Girl Magic.

“This is the year of the Black woman!” Tichina announced.

“That’s right!” Tisha echoed. “Black girls rock this year!”

After being upstaged by a young Black girl named Saniya who grabbed the mic and sang her heart out, Tisha and Tichina rapped original lyrics over the “Do It” track like, “Back in '08 we prayed for Obama to spare us/Now the young Black queen's VP and under Kamala Harris,” and “Ain't no ugly, your hair Black tiara/ Won't relax 'til they honor Breonna/ It's crazy, the heinous saying we low class/ Can you blame us for wanting changes so bad/Now my role, hit the poll here we go my votes cast!”

They topped off their opening number by shaking their hips to Beyoncé’s “Run The World (Girls).”

Obviously, this is one of the better awards show opening acts in recent memory, and social media was loving it.

Speaking of magic, fresh off the heels of their epic Verzuz battle, both Brandy and Monica performed (albeit separately) at the awards, sending fans into a tizzy. First up, Brandy performed a stirring medley of her songs “Say Something” and “Borderline,” wearing a beret and an incredible dress/catsuit combo.

One thing is for certain: Brandy didn’t come to play, she came to slay.

Brandy even graciously congratulated Monica on her Lady of Soul award. Looks like that beef was all in our heads, fam.

Monica herself wowed with a medley of her own soulful hits that left jaws on the floor

Of course, there were a lot of big winners during the night of the awards. Beyoncé won Video of the Year for her “Brown Skin Girl” (which of course fits into the theme of Black Girl Magic!), Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” won in the Rhythm & Bars category, Brandy won the Soul Train Certified Award, and H.E.R. won for  Best R&B/Soul female artist.

Only one thing proved rather perplexing. For a show themed around Black Girl Magic, it was somewhat surprising to see *checks notes* Chris Brown take home the most awards of the night. He won Song of the Year, Best Dance Performance, and Best R&B/Soul Male Artist awards. That was, uh, definitely...  something that happened. And some fans were a bit confused.

Congratulations to all the winners, may 2020 be remembered for all the Black Girl Magic!
