If you don’t already know about Reshma, she is the brave, beautiful young woman who, last year, at the age of 18, was attacked by her brother-in-law and his two friends while on her way to school. They threw acid on her face which resulted in severe burns and disfigurements, she lost her left eye, her right eye remains partially closed, and she still needs extensive cosmetic surgery to repair the muscles around her mouth.
We know what you’re thinking. F—ing bastards. Because how could you not? But instead of wishing bad juju upon them, Reshma is fighting back another way. A much more inspiring, amazing and stunning way.
Her videos are part of the YouTube channel “Make Love Not Scars” and her two beauty tutorials are getting a lot of attention. It starts off like any video with beauty tips, pretty graphics, kicky music and Reshma kicks it off cheerfully, advising viewers how to get perfect red lips. Here’s are her tips:
First, exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush:
Then, apply lip balm to keep them moisturized.
Use liner to get the perfect shape.
And finally, apply lipstick to fill in the lips.
But then the music takes a dramatic turn and Reshma reminds us in her final, most important tip, that in India, lipstick is just as easy to get as concentrated acid. And why every day a girl there becomes a victim of an acid attack. Every. Day.
In another video, Reshma points out after applying eyeliner that beauty products cost more than double the price of concentrated acid.
Reshma urges everyone to sign the Make Love Not Scars petition that seeks to ban the over-the-counter sale of acid. Because despite India implementing stricter punishment for acid attacks, it’s still shockingly easy to get the liquid. And that needs to stop.
