The new Jem and the Holograms movie comes out soon, and while we’re sure it’ll be fun in an, ahem, Josie and the Pussycats kind of way, nothing can compare to the original, animated series. Pay homage to your favourite Hologram this Halloween with a DIY costume using off-the-rack fashion finds. We’ve chosen pieces from mainstream stores, but you can just as easily save money by visiting a thrift store. You might even find some original ’80s relics. Pick a hologram, stick to the palette and you’re on your way to a truly, truly outrageous Halloween.
Jem’s pink mini dress is a must, but don’t get caught up trying to find the perfect big-shouldered wrap-dress. A fuchsia dress is all you need. Especially once you add the pink hair, makeup and, of course, star earrings!
Jem’s sister Kimber was known for her vibrant orange-red hair, keyboard skills and her ability to get into trouble. So, go out and get yourself some rich, orange hair gel and a sharp white blazer. Can’t find a ruffled pink shirt? Be a rebel and replace it with an animal-print scarf to drape in the deep V of the blazer.
Get the look: Manic Panic Dye (in Electric Lava), $8; Forever 21 single-button blazer, $48; Animal print scarf, $12; Leggings, $46; Pointed-toe faux suede pumps, $30; NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils in Electric Blue and Strawberry Milk, $7 each.
Sporty Aja is a bit of a bad-ass. She knows karate and could kick your butt. She also has blue hair that matches her makeup and eyebrows, so she’s a fun icon to dress as. Switch up her lavender mini skirt for something with a bit more attitude. We love this sequinned skirt, instead.
Shana has taste. She’s an aspiring fashion designer and she’s a talented musician, y’know. Update her ruched mini dress with a sexy onesie. And top it with a grey, silver or white biker jacket. Just don’t forget the purple hair!
