Ben Affleck has always been a bit of a troubled soul. Sure, he seemed like he had it all, what with Jennifer Garner, a beautiful, loving wife and mother of their three children by his side, not to mention an award-winning career as an actor, writer, director and producer. Through it all though, it never seemed like enough. And as his family life began to unravel over the last few years, so too has his professional life, making films that were panned by critics and audiences alike.

Turns out, Affleck had been struggling with some personal demons. In a revealing Facebook post, Ben announced to the world that he just completed rehab for alcohol addiction.

Two takeaways from his announcement: The first? “I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step.” Ben’s past may be riddled with missteps but his need to step up for his children is a brave move forward. It’s his second stint in rehab (the first time was back in 2001, long before he and Jen got together) but we have a feeling this time it’ll take.

Second is the carefully worded descriptor for Garner. We can parse the hell out of the “co-parent” title he gave his estranged wife but it’s safe to presume she approved his statement. Either “wife” would’ve distracted from his reveal and reignited the will they or won’t they divorce talks, or Jen’s merely standing by her ex until she knows he’s good to stand on his own, then is outta there; either way, both are admirable.

Good for Jen for not demonizing her ex, which many would’ve done, could’ve done and have done. Instead she prioritized and realized any negative words or actions would’ve impacted their kids, and that’s just not the kind of woman Garner is.

And good for Ben too, for getting ahead of the story and letting the public know what he’s been dealing with on his own terms. Nothing but love for this, and for the Afflecks.
