If Ben Affleck was ever your celebrity crush, the events of recent years have probably soured your perception of him just a bit. Maybe it was the way his marriage to Jennifer Garner ended (though these two deserve all kinds of props for the way they co-parent), or perhaps you simply grew out of that phase and moved on to other famous men (Idris Elba, we’re looking at you). Or maybe, just maybe, it was the discovery of that giant tattoo on his back that was the real turnoff.
A few years ago, Affleck claimed the tattoo was fake, and was painted on for a movie. The truth however, was that the ink was actually permanent, and Ben had it done after he and Garner split.
Most recently, Affleck appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he not only confirmed that the tattoo is real, but that he doesn’t hate it like the rest of us do.

The photos shown on Ellen were of Ben being papped at a beach where his colourful back was out for all to see. After photos of the tatt were first published, Garner had a few interesting comments regarding the body art. She told Vanity Fair, “You know what we would say in my hometown about that? ‘Bless his heart. A phoenix rising from the ashes. Am I the ashes in this scenario? I take umbrage. I refuse to be the ashes.”
Sigh. “Bless his heart” might be the classiest yet most diabolical insult ever to be uttered. Those were some skillfully deployed words coming from one of America’s sweethearts. Affleck’s other ex, Jennifer Lopez, reacted the way the rest of us did. “It’s awful! I would tell him that,” she said during an episode of Watch What Happens Live.
You have to love Ellen, though. “Rising from your ass,” she said of the phoenix placement. Ha! And Ben, well, you have to love him too for being such a good sport about it all. He might say he loves the tattoo and is happy with it but of course that’s what he has to say; he’s stuck with it! Aw, Ben.
