When Adam and Tanya Phillips walked into a tattoo parlour, they knew their request was unique. It wasn’t that of a bear with a fish hanging from its mouth, or silhouetted flock of birds — none of that typical stuff. Instead, they both wanted matching “birthmark” tattoos.
The British couple decided to get inked after they caught people staring at their 18-month-old daughter Honey-Rae at their local supermarket. Honey-Rae was born with a wine-coloured birthmark stretching from her foot to her lower back. To make her feel more confident, they got the exact same one tattooed on their legs as well.
“It was to make her feel comfortable, make her feel proud and not to be ashamed,” Tanya Phillips said to BBC News. “There’s not many people with that birthmark, so to us it is really, really unique. We love it and we are going to teach her to love it.”
So, how did little ray of sunshine Honey-Rae react? Of course she loved it.
According to a local TV show, her mother said, “When the swelling went down, I showed Honey-Rae, and she gently touched it and smiled saying ‘Match,’ pointing to her own leg.”
