It takes a patient person to wait in an emptying movie theatre as the credits roll. You may have just drained an upsized drink and really, really need to go but nope, you want a reward. And sometimes, at the very end of a film, before all the lights come on, moviegoers are treated to a gem, a little tiny post-credits gift from the movie-makers to you.
It can be a thrilling minute and a half, or a seemingly unnecessary 20 seconds. Whatever the case, these Easter eggs are something to look forward to. And in case you’re one of those impatient few, we ranked them for you so you can skip to the end. We know you like that.
22. Guardians of the Galaxy
Maybe you had no idea Howard the Duck was part of the Marvel universe. So the talking duck snarking to The Collector might have gone over your head. Or you still have nightmares from the dreadful 1986 flick.
21. The Grey
The final fight wasn’t so final as we see the alpha-wolf still breathing. Is it dying? Is Liam Neeson dead? Who knows?
20. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
White Goodman dancing to “Milkshake” will either make you laugh or cry…or have you crawling into the fetal position and rocking yourself until it ends.
Hilarious jokes, laughing and loving their friendship, thennnn, awkward silence. Great, uncomfortable stuff.
18. American Gangster
We’ll never know who a fresh-out-of-jail Frank Lucas shot dead but it just looked so damn cool, it had to be included.
17. A Knight’s Tale
Because farts are funny.
16. Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Neil Patrick Harris is some kind of superhero with nine lives. Well, after the Oscars, maybe seven now.
15. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Mustafa actually survived being dropped into that pit. But then Mini-Me shot him with a dart gun, he fell over the side of a cliff and was presumed dead again…before we learned he is still down there, with severe injuries, two broken legs and a makeshift splint. Anything for more Will Ferrell.
14. Finding Nemo
Not only do we see Monsters Inc.‘s Mike Wazowski swim by but that timid little fish gets his revenge on that scary angler fish.
13. Fast and Furious 6
Like there weren’t enough car chases in the movie. But this one leads to a cameo that sets up next film, and ties in a previous instalment with Shaw’s brother, played by an uncredited Jason Statham.
12. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Damn Barbosa’s undead monkey companion!
11. Adventures in Babysitting
Chris, Brad and Daryl rescue Sara from Graydon from the top of the Smurfit-Stone building, everyone goes home happy, and Chris and Daryl share that kiss. But we soon learn that Graydon is still stuck on top of the building. A dark-ish ending for such a fun movie. Couldn’t find video of it so you’ll just have to deal with the opening credits every girl mastered and what caused every guy to fall in love with Elisabeth Shue.
10. X-Men: The Last Stand
Charles was disintegrated by the Phoenix but managed to transfer his mind into someone else’s body. Or something. Whatever. It’s Xavier; he knows how to create illusions and mess with everyone.
9. Dawn of the Dead
The survivors make it to an island but still can’t get away from their nightmare. We’ll never know who was left alive, especially after yet another pack of zombies chases them down. You can watch the end sequence but here’s the opening credits as a bonus.
8. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Deadpool’s alive, Deadpool’s alive, Deadpool’s alive!!
7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
In a nice nod to the book, we learn what happened to Gilderoy Lockhart and it was perfect.
6. The Avengers (the first of two)
We finally got a good look at Thanos and despite that toothy grin, he scared the crap out of us since all he wants to do is see his master plan of destruction come to fruition.
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Fans were treated to two post-credit scenes: We were introduced to Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, and we also learned that Bucky Barnes was alive. Dun-dun-duuuuuuuun!
The taxi patron Ted Striker left outside the airport is still waiting. Now that’s a patient man. The post-credits goodness was nowhere to be found but these classic scenes will surely entertain you.
3. The Avengers (the second one)
“I don’t know what it is but I want to try it.” So after saving the world and being hungry and exhausted, why wouldn’t they have shawarmas?
2. Iron Man
The final set-up before The Avengers saw Nick Fury’s introduction to Tony Stark and the words Marvel fans had been salivating for: The Avengers Initiative.
1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The scenes during the credits were enough of a treat, as a rough Ed Rooney boarded the school bus but it was the bonus at the end with Ferris that was so great. Really, what were we still doing there?
