The spirit moves us anytime Beyoncé is on the mic, and the superstar’s latest single is no different. Just released on Tuesday night, Queen Bey stuns in her new video for “Spirit,” the first single from the upcoming soundtrack for The Lion King. Beyoncé stars as Nala in the Disney remake, with the popstar lending her vocals to both the film and the soundtrack.
The video features sweeping shots of what is supposed to look like an African desert setting (although as TMZ reports, some of the scenes were film in Arizona). Beyoncé and a group of dancers move through stunning landscapes in a handful of colourful costumes, with the video opening with Beyoncé seated in an oversized pink gown. Surrounded by dancers, Beyoncé is joined by an extra-special guest; daughter Blue Ivy walks into the frame, taking her place next to her famous mother.
Beyoncé debuted the new video on Tuesday night during ABC’s The Lion King: Can You Feel the Love Tonight with Robin Roberts. Beyoncé told ABC “This soundtrack is a love letter to Africa, and I wanted to make sure we found the best talent from Africa, and not just use some of the sounds and did my interpretation of it.”
Beyoncé acts as the Executive Producer on The Lion King: The Gift, a 14-song album that is set to be released on July 19 in addition to the official soundtrack to The Lion King, with the latter album including originals like “Spirit,” as well as new recordinfavgs of favourites from the 1994 film. Already available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify, The Lion King soundtrack will include the Oscar-winning “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” as well as “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” and “Hakuna Matata.” The soundtrack also includes the return of Elton John with the new track “Never Too Late.”
The Lion King: The Gift will be comprised solely of new music from Beyoncé, as well as original songs from Jessie Reyez, Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Tierra Whack, Pharrell, and Childish Gambino, the alter ego of Donald Glover, who plays Simba in the upcoming remake.
