Sorry ladies and gents, we have some beastly news for you. Word has surfaced that Downton Abbey is officially ending after next season, and that’s no codswallop. Once season six wraps, that’s it for Lady Mary and the Crawley family.
According to TVLine, every adult and hipster’s favourite PBS period drama will be winding down later this year. Multiple insiders have revealed that the enormous cast’s contracts are set to expire at the end of this season and re-signing everyone would prove to be an expensive feat. The majority of actors on the show have also expressed interest in moving to new projects once this season wraps.
Downton Abbey fans received a clue from Violet Crawley herself (Maggie Smith) earlier this year when she hinted that the show was getting very close to the end. “I can’t see how it could go on. I mean I certainly can’t keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We’re into the late 1920s.”
Bloody hell, right?
The sixth season of the meticulously written PBS drama that debuted back in 2010 is set to air later this year in the UK. It will be unveiled for North American audiences in January of 2016 (if they’re not naughty buggers who end up downloading it first.)
Tissue wielding fans can only hope that they receive a conclusion as solid as the show’s six season run that everyone went barmy for.
