Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their official pregnancy announcement earlier this month, which started the countdown clock to gender, baby names, birth dates, and which member of Meghan’s family would speak to the press first. Meghan’s sister Samantha Markle won that race, delivering a cautiously congratulatory message through The Sun. Now the women’s father Thomas Markle is giving his first statement and once again, it’s positive. Babies are magic, man.

Speaking with UK publication The Daily Mail, Thomas Markle says that he was sitting in his car listening to the radio while crossing the US-Mexican border when he heard the news about his daughter and new son-in-law. “The first thing I thought about was holding Meghan in my arms as a newborn 37 years ago. ‘I thought, “My baby is having a baby,’” said Markle.

Okay, that was nice.

“I was filled with love, joy and happiness for both my beautiful daughter and my son-in-law. A new baby is a blessing and I look forward to seeing a little Meghan or a little Harry.”

Hm. Still very nice and Kensington Palace-appropriate.

Markle went on to reminisce about the night that Meghan was born, revealing that his then-wife Doria Ragland was under anesthetic from her caesarean section, making Thomas the first person to hold his new daughter. “When they handed her to me and I held her in my arms for the first time it was love at first sight. She was the most beautiful baby,” said Markle. “Meghan winked at me and I fell in love and have never stopped loving her from that day forward.”

Where was this guy for the last two years? Why were we getting paparazzi-photoshoot-Thomas and not baby-holder-Thomas?

Although Markle’s name wasn’t included in the official pregnancy announcement from Kensington Palace, a fact his daughter Samantha lamented about to the press, he had nothing negative to say about the parents-to-be. “I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me. Me not getting a call is most likely a misunderstanding about my two back-to-back heart attacks and me missing the wedding. There has been so much misinformation and lies that perhaps made them mistrust me.”

And so, so many ill-advised interviews with the press, but we’re trying to keep things positive.

Sharing personal photos with The Daily Mail from Meghan’s childhood (no comment, #positive), including Thomas babywearing Meghan (he was ahead of his time) and holding her moments after she was born, Markle says that he was expecting the announcement and thinks that his daughter will make a wonderful mother. “I wasn’t surprised by the baby announcement. Meghan loves children and she and Harry have been talking about wanting a family from the start. I’m delighted for them both,” said Thomas. “She’s always been wonderful with children and most of her friends have families, so she’s used to being around kids. She will make a fantastic mother.”

The best move in this situation would have been for Markle to not speak to the press at all and hope that Meghan and Harry would be moved by the beauty of their pregnancy and once again reach out to mend the strained relationship with Thomas. But, since that’s not the Markle family way, this interview was about as good as it gets. We hope that Thomas does end up back in Meghan’s life and get to meet his grandchild.

Ugh. Babies make us such babies.
