Just months before Hollywood’s celebrity golden couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie started down the road to Splitsville, they visited Thailand and got some matching “binding” tattoos.

The couple were inked by a former monk, Ajarn Noo Kanpai, who uses steel rods with surgical needles for the job, a method known as Sank Yaat that is apparently more painful and more precise, and also carries magical properties.
Jolie commissioned three new works on her back while in Thailand in February 2016. During the same visit, Pitt also got a Buddhist symbol on the left side of his stomach, using the same ink as his wife. The designs don’t match, but the sharing of ink was allegedly meant as a symbol of unity. It wasn’t Angie’s first trip to that particular artist, either; she got work done by him in the early aughts in the form of a Bengal tiger on her lower back.
Angie should have already learned a similar lesson about tattoos, having had her “Billy Bob” ink lasered off after she split with her former husband Billy Bob Thornton. Will she get these larger back tattoos removed as well?
The pair’s binding Sank Yaat tattoos are said to have magical properties originally used to protect warriors in battle (or divorce court?) and to bring luck, strength, healing and to ward off evil for those who get them. Let’s hope they bring at least some of those things to the pair and their family as they go through the painful process of divorce. The magic may have worn off in terms of their love life, but maybe there’s still enough left to help achieve a good post-divorce life of co-parenting, and to help guide them through the ongoing custody battle for their children.
Or there’s always laser removal.
