We’ve all been asked the same five-cent question: Do you need a plastic bag? The answer is usually, “Sure, why not,” because what’s a nickel, right? But what if the bag was worth $590 USD? We’re not kidding BTW, Céline is selling a plastic shopping bag for exactly that price.
Before officially parting ways with the French label after nearly a decade, Creative Director Phoebe Philo designed the unusual, see-through bag that got fashionistas talking. The plastic shopper made its debut down the runway during Céline’s spring/summer ‘18 show, featuring the brand’s name and warning labels to mimic the look of standard shopping bags (which by the way, look nothing like the luxurious paper ones used to pack up purchases at Céline boutiques).
And although this bag is on the ‘cheaper’ side compared to Balenciaga’s $2,000 ripoff of Ikea’s blue bag, we’ll still never truly understand the hype of the anti-luxury bag or the cheap, clear plastic trend.
Whether you love it or hate it, the bag is available for purchase now until May 29 at the Céline x Nordstrom pop-up in Seattle. Along with the plastic shopper, a few items of clothing, accessories and other handbags are exclusive to the temporary shop.
Sure, we agree this bag is minimalist enough to pair well with any outfit — what plastic bag doesn’t? But handbags are an investment and nobody wants look like they’ve been shopping (at the same store) all day, everyday. Sorry, Céline.
