Bringing a new baby to the world is definitely something to be celebrated, but how soon is too soon for such celebration?
Caesarean sections (C-sections) have been gaining popularity in Brazil. According to the Public Health Ministry, C-sections make up 55.5 percent of all deliveries in the South American country – one of the highest rates in the world. And with that a new phenomenon was birthed (pun intended) — C-section viewing parties for friends and family.
“It’s a special occasion. Don’t we get dressed up for parties and special dates? It’s the same thing,” Mariana Casmalla told The Washington Post.
Casmalla is one of the many Brazilian mothers who prepped for the birth of her baby in an extravagant way. She got all glammed up for her C-section party, which can be easily mistaken for any other party. The surgical procedure is transformed into a wedding-like spectacle with elaborate decorations and a list of guests in a separate room.
Sao Luiz is a private hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil where a family can rent out the presidential suite to entertain guests. The venue is complete with a living room, a balcony and a minibar.
“It’s cultural,” said Sao Luiz’s director Marcia da Costa in an interview with the Post. “Brazilians want to plan for everything. They don’t want to hit traffic on the way to the hospital. They want to get their nails done, get a wax, to plan it like an event.”
The Washington Post reports that elective C-sections have been a status symbol among Brazil’s elite. However, there are many health professionals who are not so sure about the popular interest in C-sections. According to the World Health Organization, C-sections are almost two times deadlier for mothers than natural births. It also requires longer times of recovery for both mothers and babies.
Nevertheless, the phenomenon is changing the event-planning industry with services catering specifically to these parents-to-be and their loved ones. From gender-reveals to baby showers, this just shows that some people are happy to take their family and friends throughout every step of their parenting journey.
