The very purpose of a safe or safety deposit box is to keep whatever you put inside of it SAFE. It’s in the frickin’ name.

So imagine, after you’ve put tens of thousands of dollars of jewelry inside a bank-owned-and-monitored safety deposit box, that someone drilled a hole in it and took every single thing.

That happened to a Calgary couple, who lost family heirlooms and wedding keepsakes (expensive necklaces and jewels included) to a mystery person who somehow managed to get access to their safety deposit box.

TD Bank is still investigating the incident and re-examining security footage. While the family is entitled to reimbursement from the bank (according to a contract found online by CTV News), nothing can quite replace the deep sentimental meaning of their stolen items.

For those of us who still use safety deposit boxes, some food for thought: might want to check out the safety of your items, just to be sure.
