Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’ “Señorita” has hit the number one spot on the Billboard charts, been named Spotify’s record-breaking song of the summer, taken home a VMA for Best Collaboration, and made the Obamas dance. In a new interview with Vogue, Cabello reveals that the massive duet almost didn’t happen. Ay dios mio!
The Vogue cameras were with Camila and her stylists four days before the MTV VMAs when the popstar had her final fittings for her three looks for the night. Calling her white Balmain gown “my favourite red carpet dress I’ve ever worn,” Cabello said she picked the flowing piece for its mood. “This one stuck out to me because it was very romantic, which is where I kinda am in life right now.”
Like we said, mood. Also, swoon. As for the dress Cabello wore during her “Señorita” performance with Shawn Mendes, which did not end in a kiss, Cabello went with a design that she described as “…literally a pearl-ized version of the dress in the video.” You know, the video where the real-life couple do actually kiss. We’re just saying…
Cabello’s last look was her olive green party dress, designed to let the singer “dance her tush off” at the after party. But Cabello also joked that the green dress was her “after-party outfit which I am first going to take to Shake Shack for a burger after the show.” Everyone knows you can’t dance on an empty stomach and Cabello and Mendes certainly earned an extra plate of fries with their steamy performance on Monday night.
Joining Cabello once again on the day of the VMAs, the singer was in the makeup chair when she told Vogue how the hit song came about. “It must have been last summer where he sent me the idea for the song, and he was like, ‘Do you want to do this with me?’” said Cabello. “I thought it was super cool and it was a few months of back and forth, but I literally lost sleep over it because I was like, ‘My God, I think I do want to do it — maybe I don’t.’”
Eventually, the longtime friends and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” collaborators decided to give the track a go. “There came a point where we were like, ‘Let’s just go in the studio and sing it and see how we feel. If it feels right, we do it and if we don’t, no pressure, it’s all good,’” said Cabello. “We went [into] the studio and figured it out and then filmed the video a week and a half after.” As we now know, the song worked out in more ways than one.
To prepare for a performance like the VMAs, the former Fifth Harmony member is all about keeping it positive. “I like to wake up and listen to something inspiring,” said Cabello. “I do a lot of breathing; I do a 15-minute meditation, that helps me so much … just keeps me releasing the energy. I make playlists and put songs [on it] that make me feel empowered,” she continued, citing Madonna, Janelle Monae, Queen and M.I.A. as some of her favourite pump-up musicians. “Sometimes, I’ll look up some of my favourite performances to feel inspired.”
Mendes makes a quick cameo in the video, checking in a Cabello before the two walked the VMAs red carpet separately. But the pair quickly reunited during the show, sitting together throughout the VMAs and of course sharing the stage for their sexy performance. Muy caliente.
