For the most part, women are fantastic time managers, at any given time juggling dozens of balls in the air with work, home and personal lives (or all three), while still getting everything done. It’s what we do. And we’re great at it. So it only makes sense that even though we’re working out, we don’t have to be solely working out.
In that spin class or Pilates session, not only are women thinking about putting the finishing touches on a project for that big meeting tomorrow, what we’re going to have for dinner, if we have everything for the kids’ lunches and how we’re going to get across town to buy those to-die-for shoes — some are also having a little fun. Because, yes, “coregasms” are real and they are fabulous.
A coregasm is an exercise-induced orgasm and, as the name suggests, it is directly related to core work and the contractions of the lower abdominal muscles. But it’s not as sexy as one would think. They usually happen after several reps or sets, or when the ab muscles are already exhausted and screaming for relief. But instead of the “Ow” after a rigorous workout, some women are experiencing the Big O.
“When you squeeze your abs, you’re probably unknowingly also contracting your pelvic floor muscles to stabilize your core,” Alison Sadowy, physical therapist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., explained. “Orgasm is a pleasure contraction of the pelvic floor muscles, so by contracting them, they just do what they do best.”
A 2011 study out of Indiana University surveyed 530 women and 46 per cent of them experienced either an exercise-induced orgasm or exercise-induced sexual pleasure from activities such as cycling, running, rope climbing, yoga and weightlifting. And according to Debby Herbenick, co-director of Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion and author of Because It Feels Good: A Woman’s Guide to Sexual Pleasure & Satisfaction, it didn’t happen because the women were having sexual thoughts.
“Many of the women in our study indicated that they weren’t even thinking about sex.”
To achieve coregasm, strong pelvic floor muscles seems like a must, right? (Since orgasm involves contraction of the pelvic floor.) But for those who are super-sensitive, a simple squeezing of the lower abs during or after a tough workout could spark coregasm. And while a clitoral orgasm has that build, climax and drop-off, a coregasm can be felt in the abdomen, inner thighs and other parts of the body — with some reporting that it can go on for hours. HOURS.
And even if you don’t experience a coregasm during a workout, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can only improve (and hopefully intensify) your orgasms whenever and however they happen, so it’s a win-win.
