Many Canadians across the country opened up their mailboxes yesterday to find a familiar government document. That’s right, the long-form census is back, and it’s as mandatory as ever.
And while you might think people would groan at the thought of being forced to fill out a government questionnaire, most actually seemed to be pretty excited. Like, really excited.

#Census2016 is trending on Twitter. So proud to see Canadians excited to get back to reliable data for evidence based decision making.

This guy even made a whole night of his census
Another wild night. Going to have a beer & fill out the census. Or maybe celebrate with a beer after. So many decisions.

The lucky few who got the long-form version were envied by all

Filled out the census. I feel I'm staring in a new Canadian beer commercial or something.

In fact, Canadians got so excited, they actually crashed the census website:

And that’s when people lost it
Canadians have crashed the census page. Canada: YOU ARE A PACK OF DANG NERDS
— Karen Geier (@karengeier) May 3, 2016
Seriously: What kind of nation gets so excited to fill out a census, it breaks the website? What is wrong with us? (the answer is nothing)
— Jules Sherred (@GeekyJules) May 3, 2016
Curses! I finally finished my long form census and it says there's a problem with submission and try again. It's not working. #Census2016

Families started fighting
We fought over who got to fill out the census. But we weren't part of the site crash, leaving it to tomorrow!
— Angie (@PangieMarie) May 3, 2016
Anarchy almost ensued
@chandradawn1 Watch as the government crumbles and turns into anarchy because of one left out census! BWAHAHAHA!
— Kim Belding (@picpak) May 3, 2016
StatsCan had to step in to calm the masses
Thanks Canadians for responding in such high numbers. The site was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, but we are back! https://t.co/SnxAmqTRSr
— Statistics Canada (@StatCan_eng) May 3, 2016
But when the dust finally settled, we were left with a strange sense of pride:
Actually participated in the 2016 census. Happy to be a part of the census site crash.
— Brown Ivy (@uziclip) May 3, 2016
Only 🇨🇦 would crash a website trying to fill out a long firm census! 😂😂
