In mid-November, Carrie Underwood posted that she had taken a nasty fall outside her house that resulted in a broken wrist that required surgery and physical therapy. She joked on Twitter at the time that though she would be “setting off airport metal detectors from now on,” she was “doing great” and wanted to thank all the medical professionals who took care of her.
I just wanted let everyone know that I’m doing great. Had surgery on my wrist yesterday & all went well…even though I’ll be setting off airport metal detectors from now on…I’m so thankful for the doctors, nurses, family & friends who’ve been taking such great care of me.

On New Year’s Eve, Underwood revealed to her fan club subscribers that she also injured her face in the fall and received 40 to 50 stitches as a result. The statement was obtained by People, who shared snippets of it.
“There is also another part of the story that I haven’t been ready to talk about since I have still been living it and there has been much uncertainty as to how things will end up,” the singer wrote. “It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life.
“In addition to breaking my wrist, I somehow managed to injure my face as well.” Underwood continued. “I’ll spare you the gruesome details, but when I came out of surgery the night of my fall, the doctor told Mike [Fisher] that he had put between 40 and 50 stitches in.” She added that though she’s healed a lot since the November 10 incident, she’s “not quite looking the same.” She said that while everything is up in the air, she’s grateful that her injuries weren’t worse.
“I honestly don’t know how things are going to end up but I do know this: I am grateful.” she wrote. “I am grateful that it wasn’t much, much worse. And I am grateful for the people in my life that have been there every step of the way.” She says she’s not yet ready to step back into the spotlight, but she wanted to let fans know about what was going on in her life.
“I am determined to make 2018 amazing and I want to share things with you along the way.” Underwood said. “And when I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different.”
Since the incident, Underwood has remained active on Instagram, though none of her posts have featured current photos of her full face, the closest being a post from a few days before her admission where she is wrapped up in one of her Calia by Carrie Underwood scarves.
She was also spotted at the gym by Below Deck‘s Adrienne Gang who posted a photo with the country singer. Fans expressed great relief at the first Carrie-sighting since her accident and said that she looked well in the photo. As long as her accident hasn’t had an effect on her stunning voice or killer song-writing abilities, we can’t imagine that fans will mind too much if she’s left looking “a little bit different.”
