Maybe the average person hasn’t watched or even heard of some of the movies and series that were up for Golden Globes so instead, perhaps you were looking out for other things. Like who were the best (and worst) dressed. And who celebs brought as their dates. That was a biggie because seeing them in attendance showing their love and support was almost better than some of the speeches themselves. And the winners are…
Most Impressive Wife
Nearly right off the bat, in what was easily the best joke of the night (Margaret Cho does not count because she was EVERYTHING), Tina and Amy took aim at Cecil B. DeMille award winner George Clooney. Tina referenced his marriage to Amal Alamuddin and Mrs. Clooney’s resume:
Amazing. But while at times the whole night seemed a touch beneath her (because, honestly, after hearing just a few of her accomplishments, it’s kind of understandable) Amal was still awesome and a total class act, looking on like the proud wife we’re sure she is… even as her husband got roasted.
Best Supporting Brother
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jake Gyllenhaal made it a brother-sister date night as both were nominated (he for Nightcrawler; she for The Honourable Woman). When Maggie won, no one was prouder than her little brother who told Carson Daly on the red carpet, “I’m happy to be with my sister. In a weird way, I spent my childhood watching her. Looking up to her. It’s just wonderful.” Those Gyllenhaal kids are adorable, aren’t they? It’s a shame they’re so untalented.
Most Enthusiastic Girlfriend
Despite the cameraman missing the moment, he shaped up quickly (or, likely, was yelled at by the director) and zoomed in on Diane Kruger looking both happily shocked and ecstatic as her boyfriend Joshua Jackson‘s show, The Affair, took home the Globe for Best Television Series – Drama. Suck on that, Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey! She held his face with her mouth wide open before standing up to give him a hug. Could they be the most adorable couple?
Most Thunder-Stealing Son
As Michael Keaton‘s acceptance speech went on and on, we think we were all wondering where it was going. But after thanking bunches of people and sharing all kinds of thoughts, the Birdman star went on to emotionally acknowledge his son, Sean Douglas. “My best friend is kind, intelligent, funny, talented, considerate, thoughtful. Did I say kind? He also… He also happens to be my son. Sean. I love you with all my heart buddy.” As the cameras panned to Douglas, who was grinning tearfully, he soon became everyone’s crush. But it begs the question: If one has a crush on Sean Douglas, do they have a crush on Michael Keaton too? Because he is the spitting image of his dad.
Most Understanding Wife
Any woman whose honeymoon is cut short because of her husband’s work gets high praise in our books. Eddie Redmayne, who took home the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, thanked his new wife, Hannah Bagshawe, for leaving their honeymoon for Los Angeles. Hey, at least it wasn’t for nothing.
You might think we’re referring to The Normal Heart‘s Matt Bomer, who won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a series, mini-series or TV movie. But after thanking director Ryan Murphy and all the people who’ve lost their fight with AIDS, he turned attention to his husband, Simon Wells, and acknowledged him and their three kids, Kit, Walker and Henry, saying, “I want to thank you for putting up with me when I was 130 pounds and really grumpy when you ate pizza in front of me.”
Supermodel Chrissy Teigen is drop-dead gorgeous but when the camera focused on her as husband John Legend took the stage to accept his Globe for Best Original Song with Common, she wasn’t exactly ready for her close-up. Teary in the middle of her ugly happy cry, the Internet was all over it.
But since Chrissy is as self-deprecating as they come, she was more than happy to jump on board the mocking train, tweeting, “Sorry I don’t practice my cry face okay,” and “It’s been 5 minutes and I’m a meme.” Chrissy also posted a pic of her and John on Instagram with more crying faces. Aaaaand that’s why she’s the best.
Most Loving Boyfriend… who didn’t stand a chance
In what was arguably one of the most heartfelt speeches, Patricia Arquette (who won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Boyhood), thanked her late parents, co-star Ethan Hawke (who “reminded me of my own father”), her boyfriend Eric White (“for loving me”) and her children, “Enzo and Harlo who I love and respect with all my heart. My favourite role in this whole life has been being your mom.” We know, right? But it’s what she said at the beginning of her speech, when she addressed the other ladies in her category and the reaction it elicited that won it for us.
Until next year, Golden Globes. It was a blast.
