While history tended to either burn redheaded women at the stake or stick a stake through their hearts, redheaded men have had their own issues. They tend to get passed over in leading film and TV roles. Boo hoo.

Okay, so these two histories aren’t exactly even, but that doesn’t mean we’re about to leave our ginger brethren behind. Lack of souls aside, it can be difficult to be a ginger dude at times. As one fellow ginger told me in high school, he would never date another redhead because it would ‘look weird.’ As he pointed out, brunettes date one another, blondes date, people with black hair or grey hair date. No one notices. Two redheads? Everyone thinks you’re dating your sister. With only two per cent of the population made up of redheads, he had a point.

On the plus-side, redheads tend to take longer to go grey and can produce their own Vitamin D. Score for the gingers.

With approximately 10 per cent of the Irish population fitting into the ‘redhead’ category and 34 per cent of the population carrying the ginger gene, we decided to pay homage to some of our favourite male redheads to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
