These days, you can’t swing a cat on a red carpet (for obvious reasons) without encountering pelvage. It’s everywhere, most often revealed by a higher-than-high slit. While the term is not new – it was originally coined in response to the ultra low-rise jeans craze – it’s undergone an evolultion of sorts in 2014, thanks to Kendall Jenner’s 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards Fausto Puglisi gown. But before you write it off as a ploy by Gillette, let’s consider the evidence.
pelvage noun \’pel-vij\ the space between a woman’s thigh and hip, especially when it can be easily seen.
Celebrity trend alert: Like it or not, it’s all about pelvage right now
Kendall JennerKendall looked all pretty and innocent on top and WHOA WHAT IS HAPPENING DOWN THERE on the bottom. Honestly, I think she looks gorgeous, but I would only advise a dress like this if you are 1. A model 2. Confident 3. Have walked around in private and ensured that nothing that shouldn’t show isn’t showing.Getty Images
Anja RubikThe supermodel was quick to hop on the bandwagon. Here she is flaunting A WHOLE LOT of pelvage at the 2012 Met Gala. This is probably the most extreme example we’ve come across. Tips for wearing this yourself? Um, don’t. Getty Images
Maggie QMaggie Q’s Divergent premiere frock is a risky one. It looks awesome on her, but it’s practically impossible to pull off. If you decide to go this daring, go minimal on the jewelry, makeup and hair because this dress makes a statement all on its own.Getty Images
Giuliana RancicNow here’s a dress that’s easier for the rest of us to wear. It shows a teeny tiny sliver of pelvage instead of a whole lot. This is doable for a glamorous, evening function (not a wedding though) because it just features a touch of the trend.Getty Images
Gwyneth PaltrowThe frock Gwyneth wore to the Iron Man 3 premiere had everyone talking. It showed a lot of her behind — which is what many concentrated on — but it also showed that she was getting on the pelvage trend. Like Kendall’s dress, this one is a hard one for mere mortals to pull off. We’d recommend avoiding it.Getty Images
Keke PalmerHere’s a recent BET Awards example. This Alon Livné dress shows off quite a lot. If you reduced the pelvic display by a little more than half though, this could be a cute look you might be able to pull off.Getty Images
Heidi KlumThis dress softens the harsh edges of pelvage with its flowy-ness, making the look quite a bit more feminine and palatable. If you’re tall (and a touch brave), I’d approve this look (provided you ensure things stay where they should when the wind blows).Getty Images
Lindsay LohanHere’s a bit of old school pelvage: low-rise jeans. High tops and low, low, waistbands achieve what the high slit dresses do, just from another direction. I’m okay with low-rise jeans, but I am not okay with crop tops and low-rise jeans. It’s either one or the other, people.Getty Images
Maria MenounosWant to try pelvage but don’t have a red carpet gala on your calendar? No problem, try pelvage the old fashioned way — wear a low-slung bikini and call it a day.Getty Images
