Deciding when to hop on the bandwagon of a passing trend can be more difficult than it sounds. There’s the hesitation—“can I pull this off, or should I take it off?”—and then the issue of just how hard you’re going to commit to it.
A few of the red carpet’s regulars like Cobie Smulders, Priyanka Chopra and Demi Moore went full tilt after some recently popular styles, but instead of looking effortlessly on-trend, they look like they’re trying a little too hard.
Still, there aren’t very many opportunities in everyday life to really go all out with your style, so it’s always a treat to see the fabulous, outrageous things that celebs wear. Get ready for some baby blue velvet, strange takes on the classic pantsuit, and aggressively casual red carpet wear.
These celebs are proof that some good trends can go bad
Cobie SmuldersDid Cobie buy this dress from the Museum of Ice Cream that just opened in LA? Because it looks like a melted sundae. The cut of this retro-ish piece is kinda cool with the glimpse of her midriff, but the pattern and belt transcend ‘70s pop art and become cartoony.Getty Images
Demi MooreDemi can rock a suit, and these flared pant suits are pretty, just not this one. The floral comes across a little curtain-like, and the blue shoes don’t go with the rest of the look. Maybe if the floral was scaled down a little and not so in your face (like, smell me!) this ensemble would be more sophisticated.Getty Images
Angie HarmonThis look is… creative, you have to give her that. The most baffling part of it is the fact that the skirt/shirt thing doesn’t go all the way around the back, so the skirt bits are only on the sides. You almost expect them to start flapping and fly her to the afterparty. Weird.Getty Images
Maggi QMaggie is definitely serving some Nikita vibes here, but the only parts of this outfit that really succeed are the mesh booties and her hair and makeup. The colour scheme might be perfect, but a turtleneck and sloppily wrapped faux suede skirt don’t really scream femme fatale.Getty Images
Karen GillanThis blue is the perfect complement to Karen’s fiery locks, but there’s just a little too much velvet going on. Especially in a trench coat style dress, it’s just way too heavy. In another fabric this dress would be the bomb.Getty Images
Adria ArjonaYou probably recognize Adria from True Detective or Emerald City, but judging by this outfit, she looks more like an airline stewardess on ABBA’s private jet. This oversized pantsuit looks like it was designed by someone in the ‘50s trying to predict future fashion. Guess they were right.Getty Images
Selenis LevyaIs this Orange Is the New Black actress going to a pirate-themed costume party? As far as pirate couture goes, this is a great contender, but as a red carpet premiere look, not so much. The blatant reference to Spiderman’s colours is also a little too on the nose.Getty Images
Romy ByrneRomy’s new to the acting scene, but with the blood of Ellen Barkin and Gabriel Byrne in her veins, she’s probably a natural. It looks like she could still learn a thing or two about the dress code at a red carpet event however, because this look is casual AF.Getty Images
Robert Downey Jr.It’s cool that Robert isn’t just wearing your run of the mill suit, but the red squares on the side of this get-up make it look like he was run over by the Looney Tunes cartoon driver who paints the street lines. Getty Images
Regina HallThis colour looks just as good with Regina’s tones as it did with Karen Gillan’s, but again there are issues with the material. Where Karen’s was too rich and heavy, this dress is too light, and the unlined satin is way too prone to wrinkles.Getty Images
Priyanka ChopraPriyanka continues to put her own twist on the pantsuit, and while usually she hits home run after home run, this look is not as smashing. The palazzo pants are way too long and wide, and look like a skirt unless she’s mid-stride. They don’t mesh at all with the double-breasted suit jacket. Getty Images
Marisa TomeiMarisa is such a stunner, and the shape of this dress is perfect on her. The only problem is the mix of fabrics and colours. The light lace doesn’t gel with the shiny sheer overlay. The colours also mix together muddily instead of really popping like they should.Getty Images
Liz HernandezLiz always looks so put together on Access Hollywood, but the balance of this outfit is off. All the details are concentrated on the one side, and it’s just too much. Both pieces would be better served paired with something a little simpler to let the bunching really stand out. Together, they clash.Getty Images
Kirsten DunstKirsten’s style is heavily influenced by past trends, and normally it’s cute, but this dress doesn’t have the modern twist that others have had. Maybe it’s the sleeves that take it over the top, or the excess of buttons, but it’s all just a little too Sgt. Pepper.Getty Images
Justine SkyeJustine’s an amazing singer/songwriter as well as being totally gorgeous. This outfit does not do her justice. It looks like she was doing an Express Yourself-inspired music video but someone saw her beautiful purple hair, thought she was a mermaid, and scooped her up in a fishing net. At least she escaped.Getty Images
Becky GBecky seems to transition between sweetheart and bombshell so easily, and this outfit is definitely leaning more towards her cutesy side. Unfortunately, the flipped down overalls, though trendy, kind of end up looking like a diaper, which is probably a little more youthful than she was going for.Getty Images
Ariana MadixThis is a new look for the Vanderpump Rules star, and unfortunately it isn’t as successful as her previous outfits. There are some good ideas, but the t-shirt silhouette doesn’t do the luxurious pattern and dangling black piece justice. If the shape of the dress was taken a little more seriously, this could work.Getty Images
