Just days after Donald Trump mocked Joe Biden at the first 2020 presidential debate for wearing a mask, Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for COVID-19. And, considering Trump is still a global leader, the world—and Hollywood—had some reactions to the news. While people like Vice President Mike Pence (who has tested negative for the virus) sent Trump prayers, and others like U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson (who was diagnosed with coronavirus earlier this year), wished the couple a speedy recovery, many stars used Trump’s diagnosis to remind people of the importance of stopping the spread.“As someone who has had #COVID19 and still suffers from post-covid syndrome, I can honestly say with all that I am that I wouldn’t wish this virus on my worst enemy,” wrote Alyssa Milano on Twitter. “Please wear a mask.” Others, including Canadian actor Simu Liu (who stars in the upcoming Marvel project Shang-Chi), figure skater Adam Rippon, The Handmaid’s Tale star Bradley Whitford, and Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, were less subtle. Then there were the celebrities who questioned the timing of Trump and Melania’s diagnosis, either speculating that it is a hoax or else wondering whether the couple would now use the test results (and subsequent reactions) to try and change the news cycle narrative. And then there was U.K. actor Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair). When he was asked on Good Morning Britain how he felt about the news he responded with, “I did slightly leap in the air with joy.” He continued, “I think the phrase is, ‘What goes around comes around.’ I just hope it doesn’t interfere with him being elected out of office, that’s all… I think Trump is a catastrophe for America and the world.”Trump and Melania confirmed their positive diagnosis on Twitter on October 1 after one of his close advisers, Hope Hicks, tested positive. Hours later the President cancelled his scheduled trip to Florida, but kept a conference call with limited press on the books for the afternoon of October 2. Meanwhile, the next presidential debate is scheduled to take place on October 14, which would go down right at the end of Trump’s quarantine. At time of press, Biden had yet to respond to the news, but it is expected that he will take his own coronavirus test in the next 24 hours. To date, there are an estimated 7.5 million Americans who have contracted the coronavirus since it became a pandemic in March. Of those, 212,000 have lost their lives. The next highest country to be impacted at that level is India, where there are a reported 6.4 million cases and nearly 100,000 deaths. Here in Canada there have been an estimated 160,000 cases since March, and 9,319 deaths at time of press.[video_embed id='2047697']Before you go: Trump's age cause for concern with COVID-19 diagnosis[/video_embed]
