It looks like the imminent royal wedding of Prince Harry to fiancé Meghan Markle is bringing up all sorts of past drama. Following the recent snub of Duchess Fergie from the intimate reception hosted for the newlyweds by Princes Charles, it seems she’s not the only person of note to be left off the guest list.
According to Vanity Fair, one of Prince Harry’s most significant and long-term ex-girlfriends, Chelsy Davy, is said to be feeling more than a little burned by the choice to exclude her from the entirety of the celebrations. She’s one of around 600 guests invited to the ceremony and first general reception — but she’ll have to end her night there, we’re afraid, with no invite materializing for this second more intimate gathering of around 250 of their nearest and dearest.
While Meghan won’t be welcoming any of her exes to the occasion, a few others of Harry’s former flames, including rumoured former beau Ellie Goulding, Natalie Pinkham, and another long-term ex, Cressida Bonas, with whom he linked up with following Chelsy, have been invited to join the festivities. Cressida and Harry were also dogged by rumours of an engagement, but once again his lady love was reportedly put off by the pressure of the princess life. No word so far if these other exes have been invited to attend the more exclusive second reception affair, but it’s clear that’s where the real VIPs will be.
Chelsy and Harry were an item, albeit on-and-off, for over seven years, and it’s said her dislike of the limelight put paid to hopes of walking up the aisle with the sixth-in-line. Perhaps unsurprising — the pair met at the tender age of 19, and the stratospheric level of media attention that comes with being associated with the British royal family is not for the faint of heart.
Indeed, the all-too-real example of Kate Middleton, who’s been subject to all manner of media intrusion and violation, both before and since marrying into the royal clan, was immediately to hand, providing a taste of life as a princess. In fact, Chelsy was Harry’s date to their wedding, giving her a test-spin of the royal wife life. She told The Times in the UK, of her experience in the spotlight: “It was so full-on… I found it very difficult when it was bad. I couldn’t cope. I was young, I was trying to be a normal kid and it was horrible.” Talk about pressure.
A South African native, Chelsy was educated in the UK and met the young Prince when both were finishing school. Since her royal split, she’s embarked on a career in law, but these days can be found making ethical jewellery. Perhaps being back in those royal circles at the wedding will remind her why she decided to bail on all that business in the first place — sounds like she’s one for the quieter life.
