It’s been more than two decades since Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones stole our hearts as the odd couple in the first Men In Black film. The year was 1997. The clothes were baggy. The internet was dial up. And Smith had a huge hit with the “Men In Black” theme song. Looking to spark some magic from the original, it’s now been confirmed that actors Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are set to star in a Men In Black spin-off and we couldn’t be more excited.
All the yeses to this pairing.
Thompson has become one of the most exciting actors of the last five years, starring in everything from dramas like For Colored Girls and Selma, to the sports film Creed, to stealing literally every scene in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. She’s also returning for Season 2 of HBO’s Westworld as Charlotte Hale, the Executive Director of Delos and a woman we wouldn’t mess with whether we were human or robot.
As for Chris Hemsworth, he’s Thor. He’s been Thor forever. But let’s not forget that in-between playing Thor, he was also the sidekick in 2016’s Ghostbusters, proving that you can be Thor and be funny.
What made the first MIB films work so well was the chemistry between Smith and Jones. Valkyrie and Thor aka Thomson and Hemsworth, who starred opposite one another in 2017’s blockbuster hit (and shocking funny/lovable) Thor: Ragnarok have proven they have the chemistry it takes to fill the black suits once worn by their predecessors. Phew.
The original pair of Smith and Jones went on to star in a successful sequel in 2002 and a less successful third film in 2012 (yeah, there was a third). We could still use a neuralyzer for that one.
At this point, we’ll be happy with just one really good film from Thompson and Hemsworth. Not everything has to be trilogy-d to death (cough*PitchPerfect*cough).
Of course, we have a few questions. With Thompson now in a leading role, will the new spinoff film be Wo/Men In Black? People In Black? Persons In Black? Gender Diversity Is The New Black? Also, will there be a cool sunglasses montage? As viewers who loved the first two films and suffered through the third, we want some OG MIB Easter Eggs.
We’d also love to see Smith and Jones pop up somewhere, but hopefully this will be kept a secret, similar to Johnny Depp’s cameo in 21 Jump Street.
Not surprisingly, we aren’t the only ones counting down the days until the first trailer for the upcoming MIB spin off.
The Men In Black spinoff starring Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth is set to hit theatres in June 2019. Until then, just slide, just slide, now freeze.
