The romance is over. Despite being together for nearly two years and seemingly going strong, so strong that there were marriage rumours, it’s been reported that Chris Martin, 42, and Dakota Johnson, 29, have ended things. In fact, they’ve been broken up since the end of May and those who know them are shocked.
“Chris and Dakota were very easygoing and always seemed really happy together,” a friend told The Sun. “There was talk of engagement but now he says they have gone their separate ways, which has come as a real surprise to everyone.” Much like Martin’s marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow, he and Johnson never really publicized their relationship and weren’t seen together very often. If anything, we heard about them through others, including Paltrow.
Gwyneth recently boasted not only about how close Chris and her new husband, Brad Falchuk, are but that she’s also fond of Dakota, whom she called “a fantastic woman” that she adores. And while Gwynnie has remained close with her ex because of their children, Apple and Moses, something both parties need to be commended for, perhaps that closeness was too much for Dakota to take. Because while it’s a little intimidating for any woman, however friendly, to have to deal with an ex-wife who is still very much in the picture, it’s about a million times scarier when that ex is Gwyneth Paltrow. GP even tried to eliminate any awkwardness that may occur, with sources telling People she “worked hard to integrate Dakota into family life—even suggesting that she join family vacations. It’s very important to her to be on good terms with Chris’s girlfriends. She’s not at all threatened by Dakota and loves that Chris is happy—she’s very secure about sex and relationships and is not competitive in that way.” But, real talk, that can be quite a lot to take.

Of course we doubt Paltrow had a hand in their split at all. It’s also being reported the couple had been arguing about settling down and starting a family.
“Chris made it clear he wants more kids as soon as possible but Dakota’s career has really taken off and that’s the last thing she wanted to think about right away,” a source told The Express. “It got to the point, last month, where a light seemed to flick on in both their heads and they realised they were pulling in completely opposite directions—so they decided to call it a day.” Which means that the $5.3-million dollar beach house Martin bought in Malibu where he “hoped they would settle” and “start a brand new family of their own” will likely be on the market soon.
Whether it was a case of Dakota being more career-focused to Chris’s family-centric focus, or a little bit of Column A, a little of Column B, they’re over nonetheless. Considering their last public appearance together was in November 2018, maybe we should’ve picked up on it earlier.
