Chrissy Metz is best known for playing aspiring singer Kate Pearson on the family drama This Is Us, but in real life she is a successful actor and best-selling author…and an aspiring singer. So meta! At Sunday night’s American Country Music Awards, Metz performed the original song “I’m Standing With You” from her upcoming film Breakthrough and you better believe we’re using her performance as a our weekly cry therapy now that This Is Us is on summer hiatus.

Looking and sounding like a country superstar, Metz shared the stage with some of the biggest voices in country music today, including Lauren Alaina, Carrie Underwood, Maddie + Tae, and Mickey Guyton. Metz stunned with her emotional performance of the ballad, which, tbh, made us tear up.

“Singing this song with such wonderful women, artists and this amazing choir was truly a gift wrapped in the most special of bows,” wrote Metz on her Instagram. Thanking songwriter Diane Warren, Metz said “Thank you for this anthemic piece of art covered in love and empathy inspired by the true story of @breakthroughmovie!”

Speaking to People Magazine on the ACM red carpet, Metz gushed about her love of all things country, saying, “Here’s the thing. I just ran into Tanya Tucker. I was like, she literally kissed my hand — I have her lip gloss on my hand, folks. I really do love all of these acts and all of these artists. I got to see George Strait and Miranda Lambert sing one of my favourite George Strait songs at rehearsal. I was like, losing my mind. Everyone here is just incredible. I love country music.”

Metz began making her entry into country music in 2018, when she presented at the CMT Awards. Though fans have heard Metz sing on This Is Us, Sunday night’s performance was the actor’s live television singing debut. The upcoming film Breakthrough acts as another debut for Metz, with the Christian drama marking her first starring role in a feature film. The movie is based on the true story of a St. Louis teen who made a full recovery after slipping through ice and having no pulse for 45 minutes, with Metz playing the teen’s mother.

So yeah, it’s gonna make you cry.
