Christina Aguilera is known for her theatrical makeup — her false lashes can be so over-the-top, they look more like butterfly wings than human hairs — but the 37-year-old is wiping her face clean of cosmetics for the latest cover of Paper magazine and damn, does she ever look good.

Who knew the pop icon had such adorable freckles!? Without concealer, foundation, powder, contouring, etc, they sure do stand out. And in the most adorable way! There must be some kind of Benjamin Button reverse aging happening here, because Aguilera is somehow looking younger than she did during her “Dirrty” days.

It does look like the singer is completely barefaced, but celebrity makeup artist Kali Kennedy is credited for the looks, so perhaps there was some BTS magic that we’re not privy to. At the very least, Aguilera has got to have some kind of skin perfecting serum on, right!?

The cover is simply titled “Transformation,” and that’s exactly what springs to mind when you see the star sans makeup — or at least wearing the no-makeup makeup trend. Is this a new Christina we can expect to see around Hollywood?

The answer is probably not. Within the pages of the magazine, there’s an entire photoshoot where the mom-of-two artfully channels various versions of herself, and a handful of the looks are more of the Xtina we know and adore.

See, butterfly lashes!

“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage,” Aguilera said in an interview with Paper. “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”

So age is making Aguilera more confident in her own skin, so much so that she felt powerful enough to face the world without makeup on an international mag cover, which is awesome to hear. But it doesn’t sound like she’s ready to throw away her lash glue or lip liners or brushes just yet, and we’re totally okay with that, too.
