Well Coke, it’s been nice knowing ya.
In the coming weeks or months, you may notice something a little different about your favourite carbonated beverage (you know, unless you’re a Pepsi fan). That’s because Coca-Cola has announced that it will be changing the recipe behind its No. 1 product. Specifically, the concentration of high-fructose corn syrup will be reduced to the same level of sweetness of Coke products found in other parts of the world. Calories, in turn, will shrink by approximately 8 per cent.
But there’s more!
The company also says it will be introducing smaller containers as part of an effort to reduce caloric intake in its products. Under the new recipe, the 591 mL plastic bottles will be reduced to 500 mL while the standard 355 mL cans will shrink down to 310 mL. The newer 222 mL miniature cans and 237 mL glass bottles will also be more available.
“These new initiatives are the latest in Coca-Cola Canada’s efforts to reduce the overall beverage calories in the Canadian diet; and to provide consumers with information and resources to lead active, balanced lifestyles,” reads a statement by Coca Cola Canada. “Consumers can expect to find the new calorie-reduced formats in their local stores over the coming weeks and months as distribution rolls-out across the country.”
The changes come in the face of growing pressure from consumers and health critics, as well as declining sales. In October 2014, Coca-Cola’s quarterly profit slumped by 14 per cent. And in 2010, a study out of the University of Minnesota linked soft drink consumption to an 87 per cent increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
In that sense, we guess you could call the changes “bittersweet.” But for anyone who remembers “New Coke,” there might be a little outrage.
