It’s hard enough to conceive of how a plane actually flies, but we legitimately forget a lot of the time that two human beings (at least) are responsible for flying it. Never mind that this gigantic beast of a vehicle weighs about 12,500 lbs.

So what sorts of things go on in that cockpit? Any glimpse we’ve had inside that tiny shoebox-like space hasn’t exactly calmed our fears. There are a zillion buttons, flashing lights, alarm-y sounds, and countless other things to petrify even the most stoic flyer.

Thankfully, when stuff happens or the pilot makes a minor error (like, say, flying past the flight destination because they were distracted by their iPhones — yep, that’s happened), usually the passengers don’t have the first idea that anything’s wrong.

So you can choose to live in ignorance (we hear it’s bliss), or find out what thoughts and feelings are running through the heads of airline pilots.

Watch the video, above, to hear their confessions.
