Hollywood’s Jake Gyllenhaal has proven himself as a beloved dramatic actor time and time again, from his early days in Donnie Darko to his Oscar-nominated turn in Brokeback Mountain. But Jake wants us all to know he’s so much more than a Hollywood star who’s pretty to look at. He’s also got a singing voice that will rock your socks off.
Gyllenhaal is set to take Broadway by storm later this month when he stars in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George. He took to Facebook to give us a sneak peek at rehearsal, in which he belts out the haunting, magical number “Finishing the Hat.”
It’s not the first time on the stage for Jake, who starred in Constellations in 2014, an off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, not to mention several benefit performances of Sunday in the Park with George, so this isn’t new for him. Yet it is new for all of us who only know him as a movie star, and of course, Taylor Swift‘s ex-boyfriend.
It didn’t hurt that Jake’s director pal, Cary Fukunaga (of True Detective and Beasts of No Nation) was there to capture the rehearsal, so what could’ve been grainy hand-held footage of Jake walking around backstage could instead pass for a scene straight out of the movie version of this musical.
That being said, the awesomeness of the clip shouldn’t take away from Gyllenhaal’s talents. From his velvety tone to the tricky key changes, we expect nothing but standing ovations for him. Bravo!
