When we first came across these celebrity dolls, we wondered if our minds were playing tricks on us. Is that a doll or a photo of Angelina Jolie?! We had to look for answers. Who was behind these mini doppelgangers?

Los Angeles doll artist Noel Cruz is known as one of the most skilled repaint artists in his field. For the past 13 years, he has been taking factory produced celebrity dolls, the likes of Mattel and Hasbro, and transforming them into collectable items with a mere paintbrush and steady hand. Cruz even adds miniature hair rollers and mousse to style the doll’s hair. “Some people think I’m a weirdo, that I have nothing better to do with my time,”  he jokingly tells KTLA. Each face repaint adds an extra layer of detail, bringing the celebrity to life with refined features and colour depth. “Think in terms of tiny. The movements of my hand are ever so minimal,” he explains.

Cruz has garnered a reputation that regularly sees his artistic creations sell out on eBay. But his labour doesn’t come cheap. How about paying $5,100 for a Kate Jackson doll? No? What about a Johnny Depp doll for $1,700? For Cruz’s corporate and individual clients, money appears to be no object. And considering the end result, they may be onto something.
