Every parent looks at their child at some point and wonders, “Where has the time gone?” Because, really, it goes by so damn fast. And seeing kids go from infants to toddlers to preschoolers to school-aged to tween to teen and pretty soon — bam! They’re all grown up. It’s one thing to cry about getting up there yourselves, but seeing these one-time bundles of joys became young men and women is enough to bring on an endless flow of waterworks.

Which is why Kevin Scruggs‘ video is all the more special. He’s been interviewing his daughter, Mackenzie, on the first day of school every year since the first grade. This year, she graduated from high school. He gathered all the footage from those sit-downs with his little girl from the past 12 years and made them into the sweetest supercut ever.

We not only see the physical transformation of Mackenzie from girl to woman (from that standard kiddie bob to her current long, luxurious locks), but we also hear just how her priorities have changed. Six-year-old Mackenzie preferred colouring and writing, while teenage Mackenzie would rather look for cute boys and sleep in. Us too.

But it’s the exchanges of “I love yous” from present day to back in the day (not to mention the acoustic version of “Time After Time” playing throughout) that will have you crying all the ugly tears you could ever imagine. Scruggs’ video is a gentle reminder that parenthood is a beautiful thing but it can also be heartbreaking when we have to let them go.
