David Duchovny is trying to start the next viral charity trend and it seems a little… gross. But it’s for a good cause so we’ll let it go this time. In a video yesterday, Duchovny had his dog, Brick, lick a package (package? Is that an American thing?) of peanut butter off his face for the charity Target Zero, which works with animal shelters to get their numbers of cats and dogs killed to zero. Duchovny pledged to donate $1 for every lick it took Brick to completely remove the peanut butter. This is certainly for a noble cause, but we can’t help but cringe at the video. It takes a special kind of person and great love for your dog to be able to sit there and let him lick your face 47 times. Kudos to you, Dave.
At the end of the video, he challenges all his social media followers as well as Tea Leoni (his ex-wife), and Gillian Anderson to complete the #LickMyFace challenge with their own beloved pets. The goal is to make this a broad movement that can have the effect of eliminating killings at animal shelters.
Within a day, Gillian Anderson had posted her response to her X-Files co-star. Of course Mulder could count on Scully. She posted a video to Facebook of her dog, Nelson–in a Chewbacca harness–licking almond butter off her face and called the challenge ‘disgusting and erotic.’ Okay, Gillian. Nelson and Gillian were both a little more hesitant than their challengers, but they got 42 licks in before Nelson got bored and left. Gillian then challenged Carrie Fisher and Zachary Quinto to participate next.
So what do you think? Is the cause worth the pain? Take the Lick My Face challenge yourself and help save shelter animals ‘one lick at a time.’
