Demi Lovato, fresh out of a lengthy rehab stint, is starting over with a clean slate. The cleanest of slates, some would say. Demi seems to have realized there are some things in her life she has to cut out entirely to focus on herself and stay healthy and she’s cutting them out like her life depends on it (which it does). And it’s not just things, but people too. People whom she once considered close friends.
It’s come to the attention of some of Lovato’s more avid fans that the singer has unfollowed several of her famous pals on Instagram. Among the stars who’ve been weeded out: Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas and Iggy Azalea.
Demi and Iggy were good friends — so much so that Lovato was supposed to be a bridesmaid at the rapper’s wedding to Nick Young before it was eventually called off. Demi and the youngest Jonas Brother have been close since their Camp Rock days and they’ve done some incredible things together since then like co-headline a tour, make an adorable Carpool Karaoke appearance and launch a record label, Safehouse Records. Jonas was also one of the first people to wish her well on social media after her relapse.
Like all of you I am reeling at the news about Demi. All of us love her and need to pray for her to get well. She is a fighter. #prayfordemi

Though perhaps Demi didn’t like her supposed friends speaking publicly about her sobriety. Gomez briefly touched on the subject in an interview with Elle in September, saying she “reached out personally” after Demi’s rehab stint was reported, and Azalea told Entertainment Tonight that she knew about Lovato’s relapse and that she worried for her.
Sources told ET that Demi wants to “avoid any difficult relationships.” Hmm, guess Demi wasn’t as close to Selena, Nick and Iggy as we thought.
ET pointed out that Selena stopped following Demi first, back in January. Iggy also no longer follows Demi and, according to E!, Lovato actually stopped following Jonas in June, so perhaps there was some sort of fallout. Or maybe they just grew apart — as people do.
“She needs to surround herself with those that support her goals and to stay away from any negativity,” an insider told ET. “Demi has come a very long way. She’s grown emotionally and matured a great deal through this process. She realizes there is no quick fix and has accepted the fact she needs to take this one day at a time. She still has a sober companion and she has built a very strong support group.”
Nick’s brothers, Joe and Kevin, are safe from the dreaded unfollow for now, along with the Jonas’ boys’ parents and Kevin’s wife, Danielle. Demi also apparently still wants to see what’s going on in the lives of Drake, Jennifer Lopez, Henry Cavill, Ariana Grande and Wilmer Valderrama — among many, many other celebrity accounts — so cutting Selena, Nick and Iggy seems like a very pointed move. But if it’s what Demi needs, so be it. It’s survival of the fittest and if that means leaving some old friends behind to make your own life better, then that’s what Demi has to do.
