Cameron Boyce, best known for his roles in Descendants and Jessie, died over the weekend. ABC News confirmed the tragic news on Saturday night: “It is with a profoundly heavy heart that we report that this morning we lost Cameron,” a family spokesperson said in a statement, sharing that the cause of death was due to an “an ongoing medical condition.” Boyce was just 20 years old.

“He passed away in his sleep due to a seizure which was a result of an ongoing medical condition for which he was being treated,” the spokesperson continued. “The world is now undoubtedly without one of its brightest lights, but his spirit will live on through the kindness and compassion of all who knew and loved him. We are utterly heartbroken and ask for privacy during this immensely difficult time as we grieve the loss of our precious son and brother.”

Boyce, who played Luke Ross on all four seasons of Disney Channel’s Jessie, also appeared in the Grown Ups movies, played one of Adam Sandler’s kids. But it was his role as Carlos, Cruella de Vil’s son, in the the Descendants franchise, that really shot him to fame. Descendants 3 is scheduled to debut in August but the young actor had several other projects in the works, including Paradise City, a spin-off of the film American Satan, and Runt, both of which are in pre-production. Boyce was also set to start filming the upcoming HBO show Mrs. Fletcher, starring Kathryn Hahn.

Off-screen, Boyce was dedicated to charity work, particularly the non-profit organization Thirst Project, which raises awareness about the global water crisis. “From a young age, Cameron Boyce dreamed of sharing his extraordinary artistic talents with the world. As a young man, he was fueled by a strong desire to make a difference in peoples’ lives through his humanitarian work,” Disney Channel PR posted on Instagram. “He was an incredibly talented performer, a remarkably caring and thoughtful person and, above all else, he was a loving and dedicated son, brother, grandson and friend. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, castmates and colleagues and join his many millions of fans in grieving his untimely passing. He will be dearly missed.”

Boyce’s sudden death prompted an outpouring of grief on social media from those who worked with him to those who knew him.

Several of Cameron’s co-stars have yet to take to social media to mourn their friend, including Jessie star Debby Ryan, who did, however, change her Instagram bio image to a video of Boyce speaking, and Descendants‘ Dove Cameron, who shared in her most recent post, “no words . words will come later.”

The last photo Boyce posted on Instagram was a black-and-white of himself.
