It was just over a year ago that Star Wars fans learned there would be a Han Solo spinoff, a prequel exploring his life in the years before we met him in that Mos Eisley cantina. Then in July, we learned who would be taking on the role that, up to now, we’ve only associated with Harrison Ford. And because this is about Han’s younger days, we knew it was only a matter of time before the casting rumours about a young Lando Calrissian would be confirmed. And thankfully LucasFilm didn’t disappoint.
Meet your new Lando, Donald Glover.
Starwars.com announced the awesome news late Friday. It was Billy Dee Williams who debuted the role of Calrissian, whose first Star Wars appearance was as the head of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back. At the time, the friendship between the two men was strained and competitive at best, with the Millennium Falcon having originally belonged to Lando, until Han won it from him in a card game. Can’t you just see Glover and Alden Ehrenreich bantering and competing for girls — and ships — around the galaxy, like Billy Dee and Harrison did back in the day?
Glover has been a favourite in the fan community, and the Star Wars people have answered our call. Some might think he’s just the rapper guy who was adorable on Community and is killing it on Atlanta, the TV show he created and stars in. But The Martian and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming prove that he can do blockbusters too. Can he make one of Star Wars most memorable characters his own? We’re betting on it.
