Canada was built on hard work, determination and perseverance. We may be overly nice at times and apologize constantly, but Canadians know what they want (deserve) and are willing to fight for it.
This week we proved yet again that we are not willing to lie down when the odds are against us. No, we’re not talking about the Raptors’ rally against the Cavaliers on Monday (but that was pretty great too). We’re talking about some inspirational Saskatchewan people who were unable to stand by and watch something they love taken from them.
Early this week it was announced that the Weyburn, Saskatchewan KFC buffet (the second-last of its kind in Canada) would be closing. As it turns out, Canadians really do like their fried chicken and they want it buffet-style. Some locals banded together in an effort to keep their beloved buffet open.
Judging by the local coverage of this story, the Weyburn KFC buffet’s a source of local pride and a sort of icon for the city. Jay Onrait (a sportscaster at TSN) has mentioned the buffet several times when speculating why Weyburn has produced so many successful athletes.
So, the Weyburnians weren’t about to just let their KFC buffet go without a fight. And fight they did. Once their plight hit twitter, there was no stopping this ferocious group of chicken-loving Canadians. Even the Premier of Saskatchewan got involved, tweeting his support.

Not to worry, Canadians, this little tale has a happy ending! Yesterday, Yum Canada (KFC’s parent company) announced that the Weyburn KFC will be staying open for the time being. KFC Canada even reassured the Premier personally that they will be not be closing down any time soon.

So there you go, Canada, your perseverance and determination has paid off yet again! Now you can enjoy your all-you-can-eat fried chicken without fear.
What a great day to be a Canadian!
