Being the Duchess of Cambridge, and married to the future King of England, sure has its perks — from living in a palace, donning the most glamourous of gowns, to having a firm place in the history books. But there’s just no escaping scrutinizing in-laws… especially when one of them is Queen Elizabeth II herself.
It seems Kate Middleton is under quite the sartorial microscope, and regularly receives feedback from the Queen on her public appearance and details of her looks. According to Ashley Pearson, a celebrity journalist, the monarch takes it upon herself to send numerous notes to the Duchess on her clothing, from the length of her hem, to the colour of her pantyhose. “The Queen is regularly, allegedly, giving notes if she doesn’t like a certain hem or a certain outfit on Kate, or certain colour tights. Kate… has to wear her skirts at a certain length,” she said. She added that due to Kate’s current, and more importantly, future role, expectations for her are set just a little differently than for that other much-scrutinized Duchess, Meghan Markle. “Kate Middleton has a whole other set of rules and restrictions because she’s going to be Queen… She and Meghan are not on the same page.”

It’s certainly true, and has become more apparent recently with their splitting courts, that the two households are gearing up for increasingly divergent futures. Prince William will one day take his seat on the throne, making Kate the future Queen Consort (the title of Queen being reserved for those born into royalty). With that comes responsibilities from which the Sussexes will be blissfully free — in fact, after the birth of Kate and William’s three children, Harry slipped even further down the line to the throne, giving him and Meghan slightly more breathing space. In time, the Sussexes will take even more of a backseat as the Cambridge kids grow and come to the fore, so it makes sense Kate is held to slightly different standards.

Kate, who only recently enjoyed her first solo outing with the Queen, is already a remarkably conservative dresser, so we’re not quite sure which particular outfits the Queen took issue with. Perhaps it was the pair of wedges she wore in public, or the fact she’s known to outfit repeat? Not that it’s easy being a Duchess of any kind – Duchess Meghan supposedly raised a few royal eyebrows, when, upon her first solo engagement with the Queen, she missed the memo about wearing a hat (easily done, Megs). So whichever Prince you’re married to, there’s no getting out of the fact that there’s rule after fashion rule. Here’s hoping Kate gets on the right side of Her Majesty before it’s her turn on the throne.
