As rumours of a rift continue to plague the royal family, sisters-in-law Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton were spotted together this week hanging out with their family, including their young children. The Duchesses enjoyed the sunshine while watching husbands Harry and William compete in a charity polo match. It’s the second time the foursome have been out together recently, the first being Saturday’s private christening of Harry and Meghan’s son Archie Harrison.
The two families attended the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day on Wednesday, marking the first time the four kids, including siblings Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis and cousin Archie have enjoyed a public playdate together (or at least as much of a playdate two children can have with a one-year-old and a newborn). They’re very cute, but babies who can’t walk don’t add much to a game of tag. Mom-of-three Kate wore a pink dress and Castañer espadrilles, while Meghan stayed cool in a linen Lisa Marie Fernandez dress, affectionately kissing Archie as she stood near her niece and nephews.

Wednesday’s outing marks one of only a handful of times Meghan has left her and Harry’s Frogmore cottage since Archie’s birth on May 6. The Duchess of Sussex also attended Wimbledon on the weekend, where she cheered on longtime friend Serena Williams.
The playdate is a hopeful sign that the rumours of the foursome being at odds are just that. Threats of a rift pre-dated Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding, with reports that Meghan and Kate had a falling out during flower girl dress fittings for Charlotte. The rumours continued after Harry and Meghan decided to leave Kensington Palace, where William and Kate live with their three children, opting instead to make their permanent residence the nearby Frogmore Cottage.
It appeared that there was some weight to the gossip that the two couples were at odds when the four royals announced in June that The Royal Foundation, which was started in 2011 by Harry, William and Kate and later joined by Meghan in 2018, would now be run by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, with Harry and Meghan breaking off to start their own charity. It could have simply been a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, with the couples hoping to help even more people and causes as two foundations instead of one… or things are getting really tense. Constant media scrutiny, an impending ascension to the throne, and the everyday stresses of marriage, parenthood and simply being a human could also be factors. But that’s only a guess.
Either way, we’re happy to see the group together again in a social capacity. Maybe separating work from family will act as a necessary positive step towards rebuilding relationships and focusing on being friends and not co-workers with your in-laws. With Harry and Meghan planning a trip to South Africa in the fall, now is the perfect time to begin mending fences. Or in the case of the royals, mending oversized wrought iron gates? Sure.
