Music superstars Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran performed a duet at the Global Citizens Festival in South Africa over the weekend. But, all anyone noticed were their outfits. Or lack thereof.
Beyonce had a staggering six outfit changes during the course of the night, transitioning from a gown by British designer Mary Katranzou showcasing all 54 countries in Africa to a large pink dress by Middle Eastern designer Ashi Studio, all documented by Harper’s Bazaar.
Sheeran, on the other hand, chose to remain in a double-layered shirt and blue jeans throughout the show.
According to Mashable, the stark difference in their attire irked several people on Twitter who felt the 27-year-old pop singer should have upped his fashion game while in the presence of Queen Bey, even pointing to a double standard when it comes to fashion.
Ed Sheeran is a 27 year old man the fact we’ve enabled him to feel it’s ok to dress like this at all, let alone next to Beyoncé really boils my piss pic.twitter.com/Q6XqgTFuvQ

This photo is v v v v representative of what we expect from men and women at the top of their game, isn’t it? https://t.co/cfeLw8n1aI

I get this.
Even tho I appreciate good musicians in normal clothes the double standard is ridiculous… what is expected of female vs male artists. https://t.co/xLEcNXVuX7

There were some who did come to Sheeran’s defense however, pointing out that anyone standing next to Beyoncé will be upstaged.
Why are people giving Ed Sheeran shit for dressing like this when Beyonce is wearing a fucking loofah?
I mean, she’s nailing it, but still pic.twitter.com/RA7uMJ0zWo

What do you think of Sheeran’s outfit choice? Do you think societal expectations of women’s attire paint a double standard?
