Crown Prince Akeem is coming back to Queens — this time, as King. Eddie Murphy is reprising his character from the acclaimed 1988 comedy, Coming to America for a sequel that will be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021. Coming 2 America will see Murphy reunite with his co-stars from the original, John Landis-directed movie including Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, John Amos, and Louie Anderson (if you haven’t seen Anderson in Baskets, go do that ASAP).While the first film saw Prince Akeem and his assistant Semmi arrive in the U.S. looking for an intelligent bride to help the soon-to-be-king rule over the fictional African nation of Zamunda, this new movie follows his return to the New York burrough of Queens in search of his long-lost son and heir to his throne.Craig Brewer, who directed Murphy playing real-life Blaxploitation star Rudy Ray Moore in 2019’s My Name Is Dolomite, reteams with the actor for the upcoming sequel which brings on board a new list of supporting stars including Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, Garcelle Beauvais, Wesley Snipes, Teyana Taylor, Jermaine Fowler, and If Beale Street Could Talk’s Kiki Layne.[video_embed id='1848686']RELATED: Eddie Murphy says there’s “something sexy” about having 10 kids[/video_embed]“Coming to America was a cultural phenomenon that is one of the most loved and celebrated comedies of all time,” said Amazon Studios head, Jennifer Salke in a statement about the release (via Variety). “Thanks to Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius along with the brilliant filmmakers, writers and fabulous cast, we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this new adventure.
