Today’s Harry Potter news doesn’t include a new book, movie or Broadway show, but it does feature the reunion of author J.K. Rowling and actor Emma Watson. So yeah, we’re just as excited as if it were the first day of school at Hogwarts. The longtime friends reunited for Rowling’s 54th birthday and the pair got into the party spirit by wearing costumes. Sadly, no one dressed as Hermione Granger. Seems like a missed opportunity.
It’s unclear whether the photo added to Watson’s Instagram is from a recent event or was taken previously, but either way we’re excited to see the candid shot. Rowling is sporting a single horn and some very impressive monster makeup (she must know people in special effects) and Watson is dressed as Wonder Woman, continuing to be the feminist we know and love. The pair were joined by Harry Potter castmember Evanna Lynch, who turned her hair into cat ears and painted on some whiskers to be a cat. Watson captioned the pic “Sexy and scary! You smashed this. All the love to you Jo. Happy Birthday!!!! Extra points to @msevylynch for being the most perfect cat.” Lynch, who played Luna Lovegood in the final four Harry Potter films, commented on Watson’s photo, writing “Ahhhh I didn’t know this photo existed!!!!” Pics or it didn’t happen, right Evanna?
No surprise, Harry Potter fans were sent into a craze after seeing the trio together again. Watson’s photo earned 2.7 million likes in only seven hours and features hundreds of comments from fans who are ecstatic over the group photo. Rowling’s birthday is July 31 and the author shares her real birthday with her fictional creation Harry Potter. According to the books, the boy wizard is turning 39 today. They grow up so fast, don’t they?
Watson and Rowling first met in 2001 when Watson was cast to play Hermione Granger. The pair have remained close friends following the release of the final Harry Potter film in 2011 and Watson even interviewed Rowling for Wonderland Magazine in 2014.
Since concluding her role as Hermione, Watson has continued to be a proponent of books. The Brown University graduate launching her own book club Our Shared Shelf in 2016. The actor’s next role is in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women and stars Watson as Meg March alongside Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Timothée Chalamet, Laura Dern, Chris Cooper and Bob Odenkirk.

As for Rowling, she continues to be one of the most prolific writers of this generation, splitting her time between Robert Galbraith novels, new Harry Potter content, Broadway shows, and writing the script for the upcoming third installment in the Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them franchise. That’s not even including Twitter, where Rowling is unsurprisingly a master wordsmith.
