In anticipation of the Olympic Games next month, Team Canada has announced their flag bearers for the Opening Ceremonies with the help of one of their biggest fans. Justin Trudeau was proud to announce ice dance couple (and Canada’s platonic sweethearts) Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir as the bearers of the leaf in PyeongChang come February 9.
“The people I’m about to introduce now know what it’s like to put in thousands of hours of hard work and training to be the best. Not just the best in Canada, but the best in the world,” the PM opened, “Next month when our Olympic flag bearers march into the PyeongChang stadium, they will be carrying not just the Canadian flag, but the hopes of every young person who has aspired to represent Canada at the Olympics.”

He then reminded us all that Tessa and Scott are gold and silver Olympic medalists, three-time World Champions and eight-time Canadian Champions. The picture posted by the PM’s Twitter account pretty much sums up the mood in the room. Tessa and Scott with a flag and Trudeau looking like he’s going to pass out from excitement. Same, Justin, same.
“This is undoubtedly the pinnacle of our career,” Tessa said, “The honor of carrying the Canadian flag into the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang brings with it a sense of duty, privilege and above all, great pride.” The duo found out that they were chosen for the national honor on the weekend after winning their eighth title at the Canadian Figure Skating Championship and had to keep it under wraps until yesterday’s announcement.
OH CANADA! What an incredible honour. Thank you for the extraordinary opportunity to carry the flag into the Opening Ceremony at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. We hope to make you proud. 🇨🇦❤ pic.twitter.com/PT2znkj62h

“We commit to embodying the values and the standards that make Canada such a special place,” Scott continued, “We vow to embrace the Olympic spirit in its purest form. Team Canada is ready. We cannot wait to be in PyeongChang with the maple leaves on our backs and in our hearts.” The duo is the first male/female team to bear the Canadian flag into an Olympic Opening Ceremonies.
Tessa also shared that one of the first things Scott said after they were offered the flag bearer honor was, “Good thing we came out of retirement.” Yeah, no kidding. That’s how we imagine all of Canada is feeling right now. We’re ready to take last Games’ silver and turn it back into gold.
