Holy heck we just put Claire Danes to shame with our ugly crying.

Warning, if you haven’t seen Tuesday’s episode of This Is Us yet, you may want to avert your eyes because there are some pretty big spoilers about to go down.

On a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the most emotional episode possible, our favourite family drama just tapped out with an easy 11. We actually want to start crying all over again just thinking about what went down in “Memphis.”

The episode was actually another standalone episode that took place less than a week after Randall’s big breakdown. It featured Randall and his biological dad William heading on a road trip to (you guessed it) Memphis, where William grew up. There we got to see flashbacks of William as a baby, and traced his tragic life into the ’70s as a young adult.

We learned that William really was a talented musician and writer who was on the straight and narrow. And just when he was about to strike it big with his cousin, his mother fell ill in Pittsburgh and he put everything on hold to go take care of her. He also happened to meet a woman who seemed great at first, but who eventually sucked him into a life of drugs after William’s mom inevitably died. The rest, as they say, is history.

'This Is Us' just broke the Internet
NBC

It was super sad, but what really, really got to us was the stuff that went down in the present-day storyline. We all knew it was coming eventually, but of course this William-centric episode also happened to be his last, as the character passed away in his son’s arms by the end. It was a bittersweet ending to a character we liked but felt like we barely knew, and it left us a sobbing mess.

It’s no wonder the episode pretty much broke the internet.

The good news is that the show’s creator Dan Fogelman has said William will be back, although how, when or why remains a mystery. If you think about it, Jack has been dead this whole series yet he’s still a major part of the story. So hopefully William’s presence will feel the same.

In the meantime, here are just a few life lessons we’ll take away from Tuesday night:

1. We all need to drive with the windows down and the music up

2. We come in and out of this world looking up, but it’s all the stuff in-between that truly matters

3. If you can say that you were with the most important people in your life at the beginning and at the end, then that’s a life well-lived.

4. Life is short, so spend time with those you love. There will always be time for everything else.

5. Always carry tissues in your back pocket if you’re going to watch a show like This Is Us.

This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on CTV.
